Global Recognition, Grassroots Support Will Secure Akpabio’s Re-election as Senate President — Uyi

Dr Mike Uyi, President of Global Peace Movement International, UK, says global recognition, legislative experience and organic grassroots support are critical factors that could secure the re-election of Godswill Akpabio as President of the Nigerian Senate.

Uyi said Akpabio’s growing international profile, particularly his emergence as a federal commissioner representing Nigeria in the Inter-Parliamentary Union, underscores his relevance in global parliamentary affairs and strengthens his credentials for another term as Senate President.

He argued that Akpabio’s international exposure and experience place him at an advantage over other potential contenders, adding that the position requires a leader who can effectively connect Nigeria’s legislative institution with the wider international community.

According to him, the Nigerian Senate needs a leader whose influence extends beyond the country’s borders and who understands the demands of modern parliamentary diplomacy.

Uyi also commended Akpabio’s leadership of the Senate, describing his tenure as one that has promoted legislative progress, institutional stability and a peaceful working atmosphere within the upper chamber.

He maintained that continuity in the Senate’s leadership would provide an opportunity to consolidate existing gains, strengthen legislative cooperation and sustain Nigeria’s participation in international parliamentary engagements.

The Global Peace Movement International president further stressed that grassroots support remains an important consideration in determining the political future of the Senate President, noting that broad-based acceptance and connections with constituents and political stakeholders could reinforce Akpabio’s position.

Uyi cautioned against reducing the contest for the Senate presidency to domestic political calculations alone, arguing that the office demands a combination of experience, international recognition, political maturity and the ability to build consensus.

“The Nigerian Senate does not need a local champion without global exposure. It needs a leader who understands the dynamics of international engagement and can project the country’s legislative institution with confidence on the global stage,” he said.

He added that Akpabio’s experience and international engagements could help deepen Nigeria’s parliamentary relationships and enhance the country’s voice in global legislative discussions.

Uyi maintained that the combination of international recognition, legislative experience and grassroots support would remain significant considerations as political stakeholders weigh the options for the Senate’s leadership.

He, however, emphasised the importance of sustaining a legislative environment that prioritises national development, effective representation and constructive engagement among lawmakers.
