President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has been honoured with the Award of Excellence in Legislative Leadership by the Global Peace Movement International in recognition of his parliamentary leadership and representation of Nigeria on the global stage.

President of the organisation, Dr Mike Uyi, said the award recognises Akpabio’s contributions to Nigeria’s representation at the Inter-Parliamentary Union, IPU, and his leadership of the National Assembly.

Dr Uyi noted that Akpabio’s engagement with the international parliamentary community has provided an opportunity to advance Nigeria’s interests and strengthen the country’s participation in global legislative diplomacy.

Akpabio was elected into the IPU Executive Committee in October 2023, becoming the first Nigerian to occupy the position in 59 years, a development that renewed Nigeria’s presence in the leadership structure of the global parliamentary organisation.

The Senate President has continued to participate in international parliamentary engagements, including leading Nigeria’s delegation to the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, in October 2026, where discussions focused on inclusive governance, public trust and opportunities for all.

The IPU brings together national parliaments to promote democratic governance, parliamentary diplomacy, peace and sustainable development through dialogue and cooperation.

According to Dr Uyi, the recognition also underscores the importance of legislative leadership in strengthening democratic institutions, promoting constructive dialogue and ensuring that parliamentary representation translates into meaningful engagement at both national and international levels.

He said the organisation believes that recognising distinguished public office holders for their contributions to legislative development and international cooperation would encourage greater commitment to democratic governance and responsible leadership.

The Award of Excellence in Legislative Leadership adds to the recognition Akpabio has received from the organisation for his involvement in international parliamentary diplomacy and efforts to promote Nigeria’s standing within the global parliamentary community.
