The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Benin, Uniben chapter has declared an indefinite strike over the non payment of allowances including the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, CATA.

‎The union declared the industrial action on Wednesday, during its emergency congress which was held at the Union’s Secretariat in Benin city.

‎

‎In a statement signed by the Chairman, Professor Eghosa, the strike is with immediate effect.

‎

‎The chairman noted that the Federal  government had appealed to Vice Chancellors to pay the CATA from January this year, since the 2026 budget had not been passed by the National Assembly.

‎

‎However, the union decried the cut in August salaries of members as the CATA and other allowances were removed leading to a short fall.

‎

Professor Eghosa stated that all academic activities will be halted until all their demands are met.

‎

‎The national body of ASUU had in a previous notice, mandated all chapters to proceed on strike by 3rd of September, if it’s salaries and financial entitlements were not paid.
