The Global Peace Movement International and other Diaspora organisations have indicated their readiness to document and seek legal redress against individuals allegedly spreading false and malicious claims about the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.

The President of the group, Dr Mike Uyi, disclosed this while reacting to what he described as a sustained campaign of misinformation aimed at damaging the image and character of the Senate President.

Uyi said the organisations were, however, seeking Akpabio’s permission before commencing any legal action, noting that the Senate President had previously chosen the path of forgiveness.

He recalled that Akpabio withdrew cases against some of his alleged detractors in 2025 as a demonstration of his adherence to the Christian principle of forgiving those who offend him.

According to Uyi, the decision did not appear to have ended the alleged attacks, as some individuals had continued to publish what he described as fabricated stories, distorted facts and malicious statements against the Senate President.

He said the proposed documentation of such publications and possible legal action had become necessary, particularly as the country approaches another election season.

Uyi warned that political opponents could exploit the period to circulate false narratives for cheap popularity and political advantage, adding that unsuspecting members of the public could easily fall victim to such misinformation.

He urged Nigerians to exercise caution over information encountered on social media and other media platforms, particularly where such claims have not been independently verified.

The group also maintained that Akpabio was not known for making statements intended to ridicule, undermine or belittle the electorate.

Uyi therefore urged Nigerians to verify claims about the Senate President through credible platforms before accepting or circulating them, while calling for the condemnation of individuals who deliberately spread falsehoods.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Global Peace Movement International to promoting what it considers the positive image and contributions of the Senate President.

Uyi said the organisation would continue to highlight Akpabio’s impact on Nigerian society and propagate his positive contributions across the country.
