Diaspora-based Nigerian organisations have celebrated the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, describing him as a distinguished product of Nigeria’s democratic evolution and one of the most influential parliamentary figures of his generation.

The groups, in a joint statement, said Akpabio’s rise from the politics of Akwa Ibom State to the leadership of Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber, and subsequently to a prominent position within the global parliamentary community, demonstrates a rare combination of political experience, institutional knowledge, resilience and capacity to manage complex responsibilities.

They said what increasingly distinguishes Akpabio is not simply the office he occupies, but the maturity with which he has handled the enormous pressures associated with presiding over Nigeria’s Senate.

According to the organisations, the Senate Presidency is one of the most demanding political offices in Nigeria because it requires the occupant to constantly balance party interests, regional considerations, executive-legislative relations, individual ambitions and the institutional responsibility of protecting the integrity of the legislature.

They argued that Akpabio has demonstrated an understanding of this delicate balance, particularly through his ability to remain composed in moments of political tension and to deploy dialogue, humour and political experience in managing situations that could otherwise escalate.

The groups noted that his jovial disposition should not be mistaken for a lack of seriousness. Rather, they described his humour as one of his greatest interpersonal strengths, allowing him to create an atmosphere in which political disagreements can be managed without necessarily becoming personal confrontations.

“Akpabio has mastered the difficult art of combining authority with approachability,” the groups said. “He can preside over serious legislative business and, moments later, use humour to diffuse tension. That is not weakness; it is emotional intelligence and political maturity.”

The organisations also drew attention to Akpabio’s growing international parliamentary relevance. They noted that he is a member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the global organisation of national parliaments, where his mandate currently runs until October 2027.

They said Akpabio’s participation at the IPU provides Nigeria with an additional platform to project its parliamentary experience and national interests within the global parliamentary community. The IPU itself places emphasis on parliamentary diplomacy, dialogue, peace, democracy and development—areas which, they argued, provide opportunities for Nigeria to strengthen its international legislative engagement.

The groups recalled that Akpabio has also led Nigeria’s delegation to IPU activities, including the 152nd IPU Assembly, further demonstrating the international responsibilities that now accompany his position as Nigeria’s Senate President.

At home, they said, his greatest test has been the management of the National Assembly itself. The official National Assembly website currently identifies Akpabio as President of the Senate and records substantial legislative activity during the current Senate, including bills progressing through various stages of consideration.

The organisations therefore contend that assessing Akpabio should go beyond the political controversies that inevitably surround any occupant of a major public office. In their view, the more important question is whether he has demonstrated the temperament, experience and political sophistication required to keep a complex legislative institution functioning.

They described his journey as a demonstration of political evolution—from executive leadership as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, through the Senate, to the Presidency of the Senate and now to a significant role in international parliamentary affairs.

For the groups, this combination of executive experience, legislative exposure, parliamentary diplomacy and human relations places Akpabio in a distinctive category among contemporary Nigerian politicians. They said his ability to remain relevant across different political environments is itself evidence of a leadership capacity that should not be underestimated.

The organisations also praised what they described as Akpabio’s “big heart”, saying his personal relationships, generosity and willingness to empower people have contributed to his ability to build enduring political networks. They acknowledged that such qualities can generate both admiration and criticism, but argued that the capacity to bring people together remains an important ingredient of effective political leadership.

They urged Nigerians to examine Akpabio’s leadership through the broader prism of institution-building and parliamentary diplomacy, rather than through the narrow lens of partisan politics. In their view, Nigeria needs legislative leaders who can withstand pressure, negotiate competing interests, communicate effectively and still maintain the human touch required to lead people.

The groups concluded that Akpabio’s most compelling attribute may ultimately be his ability to combine seemingly contrasting qualities: firmness without unnecessary rigidity, political calculation without losing human connection, seriousness without abandoning humour, and national responsibilities with international parliamentary engagement.

They therefore described Senator Godswill Akpabio as a politician whose place in Nigeria’s contemporary democratic story is becoming increasingly significant, adding that his continued leadership of the Senate deserves serious consideration on the basis of experience, maturity, institutional understanding and demonstrated capacity to navigate the complexities of parliamentary leadership.
