A coalition of Nigerian diaspora groups has condemned what it described as sustained attacks by Senator Adams Oshiomhole on Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, warning that personal political ambitions should not be allowed to undermine the leadership of the National Assembly.

The groups, in a statement jointly signed by their leaders, expressed concern over Oshiomhole's recent criticisms of Akpabio, alleging that the attacks appeared aimed at diminishing the Senate President's standing and creating division within the upper legislative chamber.

The coalition argued that Akpabio emerged as Senate President through broad-based support from lawmakers across party lines and has since demonstrated leadership qualities that have helped foster cooperation and stability in the Senate.

According to the groups, every senator has the constitutional right to aspire to leadership positions within the National Assembly, but such ambitions should be pursued through consensus-building and constructive engagement rather than public attacks on incumbent office holders.

The coalition further alleged that Oshiomhole's recent public comments and conduct during legislative proceedings raised questions about his suitability for higher leadership responsibilities within the Senate.

The groups particularly referenced a recent committee session in which Oshiomhole reportedly made sweeping allegations against officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, describing the remarks as inappropriate and capable of eroding public confidence in national institutions.

They maintained that public office holders should exercise restraint and avoid generalisations that could damage the credibility of government institutions and public servants.

The coalition also accused the former Edo State governor of attempting to galvanise public sentiment against both the Senate as an institution and Akpabio as its leader, warning that such actions could undermine democratic governance.

According to the statement, Nigeria's political leaders should focus on addressing pressing national issues, including economic development, security and citizens' welfare, rather than engaging in what it described as political grandstanding.

The groups therefore urged Oshiomhole to demonstrate greater decorum and maturity in his political engagements, stressing that leadership should be earned through competence, vision and the ability to unite colleagues rather than through criticism of political rivals.

They called on all political actors to place national interest above personal ambition and contribute to strengthening democratic institutions.
