Edo Police Arrest Social Media Influencer Over False School Kidnap Claims

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a social media influencer, Uzebor Emmanuel, popularly known as "Aza Woman," for allegedly spreading false information about the purported abduction of students from two schools in Benin City.

The arrest follows a viral video in which the suspect claimed that terrorists invaded Green Park Academy, Aduwawa, and Western Boys' College, Ikpoba Hill, abducting several students in coordinated attacks.

In the widely circulated video, Uzebor alleged that six students were kidnapped and transported in mini-buses by their abductors. She further claimed that while some of the victims managed to escape, others were released only after ransom payments were made.

The allegations triggered concern among residents and parents, prompting security agencies to investigate the claims.

Confirming the arrest on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said investigations revealed that the reports were false and capable of causing unnecessary panic among members of the public.

According to the police spokesperson, the misleading publications generated widespread apprehension, heightened public anxiety, and had the potential to erode public confidence in the state's security framework.

The Command noted that the suspect is currently in custody and would be prosecuted at the conclusion of investigations.

"The suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations," the police said.

The Command also cautioned residents against the indiscriminate dissemination of unverified information, especially on social media platforms.
