The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has directed that an apology be conveyed to Professor Eyo Ekpe, Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, as well as members of the Nigerian Medical Association, following the May 12, 2026 incident involving personnel of the commission and medical staff of the hospital.
The directive followed the receipt and review of a preliminary report on the incident by the commission.
Mr. Olukoyede, while acknowledging that the welfare and wellbeing of Nigerians remain central to the mandate of the commission, expressed regret over the discomfort and disruption the incident caused hospital staff and members of the public.
He reiterated the commission’s decision to launch a full-scale investigation into the matter, assuring that any officer found to have acted outside the acceptable standards of professional conduct would face internal disciplinary measures upon conclusion of the probe.
The EFCC chairman also expressed commitment to engaging relevant stakeholders to address the issues arising from the incident and prevent a recurrence in the future.
He, however, maintained that the unfortunate development would not deter the commission from carrying out its responsibilities in tackling economic and financial crimes across the country.
Mr. Olukoyede further appealed to members of the Nigerian Medical Association and other professional bodies to continue supporting the EFCC in its efforts to combat corruption and other financial crimes in Nigeria.
