President of the Global Peace Movement International, Dr Mike Uyi, has appealed to Nigerians not to inflame the recent controversy surrounding the disagreement between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Adams Oshiomhole, describing the development as an internal parliamentary matter that should not be exaggerated.
Dr Uyi said while the exchange had generated public debate, it should not be interpreted as a crisis capable of undermining the stability of the National Assembly. According to him, democratic institutions naturally accommodate differing views, and occasional disagreements among lawmakers are part of the legislative process.
He noted that the decision by the principal officers of the Senate to initiate the now controversial amendment was informed by the need to preserve institutional memory and safeguard the traditions, procedures and continuity of the upper chamber. He explained that legislative institutions across democratic societies often place premium value on experience, precedent and familiarity with parliamentary rules in the management of their internal affairs.
The peace advocate stated that lawmakers entering the Senate for the first time should take time to understand the workings of the chamber, learn its traditions and master its rules before seeking principal leadership positions. He said legislative leadership requires not only popularity and political strength, but also deep institutional knowledge, procedural competence and an appreciation of the culture of parliament.
Dr Uyi, however, commended the Senate for subsequently rescinding the amendment after concerns were raised by Nigerians. He said the decision reflected democratic maturity, responsiveness and respect for constitutional order.
According to him, the reversal was a commendable step that helped to ensure consistency with the provisions of the Constitution and demonstrated that the Senate remains attentive to public opinion and committed to acting within the bounds of the law.
He said the swift reconsideration of the matter should reassure Nigerians that the National Assembly possesses the internal capacity to review its actions where necessary in the broader interest of democracy and national cohesion.
He also called on political actors, commentators and citizens to avoid narratives capable of deepening division or creating unnecessary tension in the polity. He said moments such as this should be approached with restraint, patriotism and a commitment to strengthening democratic institutions rather than weakening them.
He further observed that both Senator Akpabio and Senator Oshiomhole remain prominent leaders of the All Progressives Congress and have maintained cordial political relations over the years. According to him, their shared political history and commitment to the governing party should reassure Nigerians that the recent disagreement does not amount to a breakdown of relations.
Dr Uyi urged supporters of both leaders to embrace moderation and refrain from statements capable of escalating tensions. He stressed that national interest must remain superior to individual preferences, adding that unity within political institutions is vital to democratic stability and good governance.
He expressed confidence that the Senate would continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities in an atmosphere of cooperation, mutual respect and fidelity to democratic principles.
