The Chairman of Global Peace Movement International, Dr Mike Uyi, has commended the National Assembly of Nigeria for its resolution to pursue diplomatic solutions to the recurring xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa.

Dr Uyi described the decision as a timely and responsible intervention that reflects Nigeria’s commitment to the protection of its citizens and the preservation of African solidarity.

He also praised the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, for taking the lead on the planned fact-finding mission to South Africa over the repeated attacks.

According to him, the move by Senator Akpabio and the National Assembly demonstrates leadership, courage and a clear determination to engage the South African authorities directly on a matter that has continued to generate concern across the continent.

Dr Uyi said the fact-finding mission should provide an opportunity to establish the circumstances surrounding the recent attacks, engage affected communities, and seek practical commitments that will guarantee the safety of Nigerians and other Africans living and doing business in South Africa.

He, however, stressed that diplomacy must be backed by firm and measurable actions.

Dr Uyi called on the Nigerian government to consider stronger measures where necessary, including economic sanctions and other lawful diplomatic steps, should the attacks continue without concrete action from the South African authorities.

He noted that repeated assaults on fellow Africans undermine the spirit of continental unity and weaken the ideals upon which the African Union was founded.

He urged both Nigeria and South Africa to work together to strengthen cooperation in intelligence sharing, law enforcement and the protection of foreign nationals, while ensuring that perpetrators of xenophobic violence are identified, prosecuted and held accountable.

Dr Uyi further appealed to African leaders to treat the issue with urgency, warning that silence or delayed action could embolden further attacks and threaten regional peace, economic cooperation and mutual trust among African nations.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Global Peace Movement International to promoting peaceful coexistence, justice and the protection of human dignity across the African continent.
