LASU Workers Reject Government’s Offer, Vow to Continue Strike Despite Resumption Plans

Lagos State University (LASU) staff unions have rejected the state government’s latest offer, insisting that the strike must persist until full salary arrears are paid. Despite the rejection, LASU management announced that academic activities will resume on Monday, August 11, 2025.

In a recent agreement signed on August 7 between the Joint Action Committee (JAC) and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the government agreed to pay 12 months of the 23 months of arrears owed to workers, covering a partial 25% and 35% salary increase. However, LASU workers, during an emergency congress over the weekend, condemned the deal, accusing JAC leaders of signing without proper consultation.

The unions, in a letter to the Deputy Governor, reaffirmed their stance, demanding full payment of the 23-month arrears. They proposed a payment plan in five tranches—four of five months and one of three months, starting in August—rejecting the government's 12-month offer as insufficient.

Despite the workers’ stance, LASU Vice Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello appealed to staff to accept the government’s offer, emphasizing the importance of resuming academic activities to avoid further disruption. She stated that the management and JAC had acted in the best interest of the staff and the university community.

The unions’ leadership expressed frustration, stating, “Congress resolved that full payment of the 23-month arrears be made under an appropriate arrangement deemed fit by the government and LASU management.”

While the university has announced resumption, the strike continues as unions insist on complete arrears settlement, highlighting ongoing tensions between staff and authorities over the unpaid salaries.
