Oshiomhole Urges Women with Multiple Births to Embrace Family Planning, Warns of Maternal Risks

By Israel Adebiyi

Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole has advised women with multiple previous pregnancies—such as one with multiple children—to be strongly discouraged from further childbearing, warning of the significant risks to maternal health.

Dr. Oshiomhole made the statement while emphasizing the critical importance of family planning in reducing maternal mortality and improving public health outcomes across the state.

“Family planning remains a critical intervention in the efforts of the Edo State Government to reduce maternal mortality, which continues to be a significant public health challenge in Nigeria,” he stated.

Citing global data, the Commissioner noted that effective family planning could reduce maternal deaths by up to 30%.

He stressed that meaningful development cannot occur without addressing fundamental health indicators such as maternal mortality.

“No government can claim real progress without addressing key health indicators like maternal mortality,” he said.

Dr. Oshiomhole also urged fellow public officials to actively support increased investment in reproductive health, emphasizing his personal commitment to ensuring that Governor Monday Okpebholo fully understands and supports the expansion of funding and policy initiatives related to family planning.

“It’s not just a health issue—it’s a matter of social development and economic stability,” he said.

Acknowledging resistance to family planning in many communities, including cultural and religious opposition, Dr. Oshiomhole pointed out that myths and misinformation continue to obstruct acceptance and implementation of family planning programs.

“In addressing barriers to family planning, we must confront religious and cultural sensitivities head-on. It is our responsibility to educate our people and dispel these harmful misconceptions,” he added.

He praised Governor Okpebholo’s focus on primary healthcare reform, noting that the administration is dedicated to making healthcare more accessible, affordable, and efficient—particularly in rural areas.

“Family planning is a key pillar of our social contract with the people, and the Governor is fully committed to fulfilling his campaign promises in that regard,” he noted.

Dr. Oshiomhole concluded with a call for collective action, urging traditional rulers, religious leaders, and grassroots mobilizers to unite in shifting societal perceptions and driving long-term change.

“With coordinated effort, strong leadership, and community-driven action, we can build a healthier and more empowered Nigeria,” he affirmed.
