Edo Rep. member, Marcus Onobun Denies Cultism Allegation, Calls It Politically Motivated

Hon. Marcus Onobun, member representing Esan West, Esan Central, and Igueben Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has strongly denied allegations linking him to cult-related activities in Iruekpen, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

In a statement titled “Disclaimer on Alleged Cult-related Issues in Iruekpen” and made available to journalists, Onobun dismissed the claims as “false, baseless, and politically motivated smear tactics” aimed at tarnishing his image and distracting from the progress being made in his constituency.

“For clarity, I have never supported, funded, or participated—directly or indirectly—in any cult activity,” Onobun stated. “This is nothing but an attempt to undermine the trust my constituents have placed in me.”

He revealed that his last visit to Edo State was on April 22, 2025, and that the alleged cult clash occurred not near his residence, but in a local brothel.

“It’s clear this narrative is being crafted to lay the groundwork for a sinister agenda against the opposition,” he said.

The lawmaker reaffirmed his commitment to peace, democratic values, and the rule of law, stressing that security and development remain top priorities for him.

“No meaningful development can take place in an unsafe environment,” he said, citing the recent commissioning of a police station in Iruekpen as part of his efforts to enhance community safety.

Onobun urged the media and the public to verify information before spreading reports capable of inciting panic or damaging reputations. He also warned those behind the allegations to desist from divisive politics and character assassination.

“Our community needs leaders who promote unity and progress — not falsehood and discord,” he added. “I remain undeterred in delivering on my mandate for peace, growth, and good governance.”
