Troops Raid Suspected Fraudsters’ Hideout in Benin, Arrest 31, Recover Fetish Items

By Israel Adebiyi

Troops of the 4 Brigade Nigerian Army have uncovered a suspected fraudsters’ hideout at a residential building in First Bank Estate, Awesome Garden, along the Benin-Sapele By-Pass in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.

The operation, which was based on credible intelligence, was led by the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Ebenezer Oduyebo.

According to the Brigade's Public Relations Officer, Captain Chinonso Oteh, the troops arrested 31 individuals, comprising both suspects and victims, and recovered various items including a Toyota vehicle, smartphones, laptops, cash, a pot of shrine, fetish objects, and other valuables.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the individuals were deceived by the alleged syndicate leader, identified as Mr. Marvin Osabunye, who is currently on the run.

He reportedly lured them from various parts of the country under the false promise of lucrative job opportunities. Upon arrival, they were confined in the building for periods ranging from one to two years and coerced into criminal activities, including cybercrime, armed robbery, and kidnapping.

Captain Oteh noted that the arrested individuals and recovered exhibits have been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Edo State Command, for further investigation and prosecution.

Speaking on the operation, the Commander of 4 Brigade, Brigadier General Ebenezer Oduyebo, praised the troops for their vigilance and swift response to intelligence.

“This operation is a testament to our commitment to ridding Edo State of criminal elements and restoring public confidence. The Nigerian Army will continue to work with other security agencies to ensure that no part of this state becomes a safe haven for fraudsters, kidnappers, or cybercriminals,” he stated.

He added, “It is disturbing to discover that some of the victims had been held for over a year under inhumane conditions and manipulated into participating in unlawful activities. This further highlights the importance of timely intelligence sharing and public vigilance.”

Brigadier General Oduyebo reiterated the Brigade’s resolve to remain relentless in its efforts to ensure peace and security across Edo State. “Our duty is to protect lives and property, and we will not allow criminal networks to take root in our communities. I commend our troops and partner agencies for their professionalism, and we urge the public to continue supporting security operations by providing credible information.”
