Some commercial drivers at the Benin Central Park, Obakhavbaye on Tuesday expressed dismay over the introduction of digital wallet by the state government in carrying out daily levies payment.
The drivers lamented who spoke in an exclusive interview with Super FM decried the array of levies they pay on a daily basis, insisting that the process of implementing an e-wallet in payment of park levies would only make their work more difficult.
They noted that the government was victimizing drivers operating at the Benin Central Park, stressing that the e-wallet scheme was not extended to other drivers outside the Park.
They also complained that the process for registering for the e-wallet scheme was chaotic as drivers who registered for the National Identification Number (NIN) in other states were not being captured by the agents of the government.
The Manager of the Central Park, Amadin Osarentin Edosa however explained that the e-wallet scheme being introduced by the government was to automate levy payment systems and reduce diversion of government revenues.
Edosa explained that the e-wallet scheme was meant to protect the drivers from outrageous levies, adding that it took into consideration the various levies being collected at the park and by local government revenue collectors.
According to him, series of meetings have been conveyed to encourage the drivers under the scheme with little success.
He added that since the commencement of the e-wallet scheme in November 2023, no fewer than 600 drivers have been registered at the pack.
