The Akwa Ibom State government has announced a thorough investigation into the sudden death of a pregnant woman and her newborn at the General Hospital in Ikot Ekpene, following widespread social media outcry and allegations of medical negligence.
A viral video shows grieving relatives pleading with Governor Umo Eno to intervene, highlighting concerns over healthcare standards and the conduct of medical staff in government hospitals across the state.
In response, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel, expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and confirmed that the governor has directed the formation of a high-powered Commission of Inquiry, comprising medical and legal experts, to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and prevent future incidents.
The commissioner stated, "We are committed to transparency and accountability. Any verified negligence will be met with appropriate disciplinary action."
He also revealed that a team from the Ministry of Health conducted an on-the-spot investigation at the hospital to gather initial accounts.
Governor Umo Eno reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to maternal and child health, emphasizing ongoing investments in healthcare infrastructure, personnel, and emergency response systems.
The government urges the public to remain calm as it works diligently to ensure justice and improve healthcare quality across Akwa Ibom.
"The safety of every Akwa Ibom citizen remains our top priority," Eno assured.
