Shaibu’s appointment followed shortly after the upper chamber approved General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, marking the start of the vetting process for President Bola Tinubu’s newly appointed service chiefs.
The confirmation proceedings, held at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, were conducted under tight security. Senators conducted a series of both closed and open sessions to evaluate the nominees.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who oversaw the session, described the exercise as a constitutional duty aimed at ensuring only capable and patriotic officers are entrusted with the nation’s security. He also advised senators against over-questioning the nominees, noting that a closed-door session would provide a more thorough review.
Senator Isah Jubrin, representing Kogi East, expressed confidence in Shaibu’s ability and character. “I have known him for 30 years. He is humble and takes his responsibilities seriously, which I consider an asset,” Jubrin said. “I believe he has what it takes to help Nigeria overcome its current security challenges.”
The screening and confirmation of Shaibu and Oluyede underscore the Senate’s commitment to fast-tracking the approval of all service chiefs appointed by President Tinubu, as part of a broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s security leadership.
