NGO Advocates Tree Planting to Combat Deforestation, Harsh Climate in Edo State

By Israel Adebiyi

In response to the escalating challenges of harsh weather conditions and deforestation, the LilBeckKing Development Foundation (LIBEDEF) has called on every household in Edo State to plant at least one tree within their premises.

The Director of LIBEDEF, Destiny Aigbokhae, made the call during a courtesy visit to the Enogie of Oghede, His Royal Highness Osadebamien Aghaghowa, in Benin City, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action to address environmental concerns.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Super FM, Aigbokhae outlined the numerous benefits of tree planting, stressing its role in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change, enhancing air quality, and beautifying the environment.

"Planting a tree in your compound is not just an environmental duty; it is an investment in our collective future. Trees provide shade, improve air quality, and act as natural barriers against flooding and erosion," Aigbokhae stated.

He further urged residents to embrace tree planting as a fundamental step toward achieving environmental sustainability in Edo State.

Also lending his voice to the initiative, the Coordinator General of Edo Civil Society Organizations (EDOSCO), Leftist Omobude, called on the people of Oghede community to take ownership of the project by actively participating in tree-planting exercises.

He noted that trees play a crucial role in filtering pollutants, promoting biodiversity, and fostering a healthier living environment.

"A single tree can absorb carbon dioxide, provide oxygen, and even contribute to mental well-being. The importance of trees in our fight against climate change cannot be overstated," Omobude remarked.

In his response, the Enogie of Oghede community expressed his appreciation to LIBEDEF for their proactive approach in environmental conservation and pledged his commitment to championing the cause.

"This initiative aligns with our vision for a greener and healthier community. We will ensure that every household in Oghede embraces tree planting," he assured.

The visit concluded with a symbolic tree-planting exercise within the Enogie’s palace, where various species of trees were planted by members of several non-governmental organizations, including representatives from the Edo State Ministry of Environment.

The collaborative effort highlighted the growing partnership between civil society and government agencies in tackling environmental challenges.

LIBEDEF reiterated its commitment to sensitizing more communities across Edo State and providing technical support to ensure the sustainability of the initiative.
